Prices: £55 per session (discounted for benefits).
If you're new to counselling you may wonder what to expect... Person-Centred counselling is simply a type of therapy that allows you to be the focus of everything that happens in the room.
Personal change occurs through the development of the counselling relationship and the depth to which we explore the issues you bring to counselling. Through this exploration we can discover the barriers that hold you back in experiencing a more authentic approach to your life.
Naturally this process at times may feel difficult, challenging. We may experience new, hidden or unknown aspects of your self. These times are all important within the therapeutic process. The counselling room is a confidential and safe space for this to occur.
First Session: We'll sit and begin the process of understanding each other through an assessment of your needs. If we decide to continue we'll build an agreement of how we'll work together. I encourage you to ask any questions along this process and at any other times.
Further Sessions: The length of time we spend together is often defined by the extent of the issues you bring in (from a one-off session to ongoing support). Sessions will move at your pace. It will be my job as your counsellor to establish and build increasingly strong, supportive conditions over the time you're in therapy. This is to ensure you feel secure in exploring your issues freely and move forward in ways that are suited to your needs. I will endeavour to be with you, by your side, as equals through this process and for as long as we believe is necessary.
Transparency across all aspects of my work is essential and you should expect this service from me at all times. If you're interested in learning more about how Person-Centred therapy works or how it can help you please see below.
Common client issues I have worked with and can benefit from Person-Centred counselling include:
Strictly speaking, only you can answer that question. What might be useful to know though is that you don't just need to feel desperate to access counselling. Whatever state of mind we may find ourselves in, there's plenty of evidence that proves counselling can benefit us in the short and longer term, help us gain understanding of our problems and ourselves and subsequently assist us in living more fulfilled lives.
In recent years there have been significant cultural shifts in understanding the value of talking more about our mental health and how this can benefit everyone. Counselling is now being made available to more schools, universities and workplaces than ever before.
The simple reason for this? It works...
By explaining to you in our first session the personal benefits counselling could bring you, you're free to make your own mind up about any further work we may do together.
As people come to counselling for a broad range of issues and problems the length of time and how you expect to feel can depend on a number of factors. Initially, 6 sessions can be sufficient time to build some understanding of your issues and establish a strong therapeutic relationship. This period may also be enough for you to know whether you're gaining from our work together.
Many clients then choose to continue and explore their issues deeper with many expanding their focus for therapy into wider areas. You are of course free to end our work whenever you wish.
Much of what person-centred counselling is based on is the strength and depth of relationship between the counsellor and the client. Like any relationship this will likely 'ebb and flow'. As trust builds and we're able to more freely express our inner self clients can often gain a greater freedom of thought and clarity.
Clients sometimes report experiencing a greater sense of 'who they are' which can lead to better connections with other people and the greater world.
As a registered member of the BACP I am bound by certain conditions within my role as a practising counsellor.
I am obliged at all times to:
I am required to formally explore aspects of my work with a qualified supervisor in order to improve the quality of my work with you. In rare situations I am legally required to share confidential information. I will ensure this is all made clear to you within our first session.
If, after our first chat we wish to work together I will aim to see you for an initial assessment with 1-2 weeks depending on our availabilities and whether you'd like to be seen online or in person. If you'd like to know about my latest availability please get in touch.
